Coon Creek, AR, Day 1,Granite Mountain
You are here: MineralCollecting.org >> Posted Articles >> Article 2

Granite Mountain, on the south side of Little Rock, AR, is mined on the north by 3M Quarries and on the south by Granite Mountain Quarries. We visited Granite Mountain Quarry #2 on 10/20/99. After conversing for while, we drove around to the second level of the main (east) pit in the #2 quarry. We stopped at a section of syenite pegmatite dike that GMQ had shot through in the south face of the pit. Glitters of stilbite caught my eye as I stepped from the van; I was a good 25 feet from the rubble. Pockets containing beautiful clustered stilbites as well as free standing individual crystals of stilbite 2 to 4 millimeters long were the first mineralization that I noticed. A few boulders later (and to the right of where we first stopped), we found half inch chabazite crystals that were clustered in three to four inch wide cavities. A large boulder with several pods of imbedded calcite had two pockets of clear calcite crystals up to 1 centimeter on fire red stilbite micros. In addition to the stilbite (far better that previous stilbite finds) and chabazite we also found aegirine, allanite, analcime, chlorite, natrolite, pyrite, pyrophanite, titanite, and several minerals that still need to be identified, all in micro form. The weather was clear, dry and cool and our abundant joy in being "out and about" was reflected by the amount of material that we took. Our tires may never be the same! ~~~Adam.
