Ryobi Hammer Drill
You are here: MineralCollecting.org >> Posted Articles >> Article 37

As far as I know, drills like this one are unavailable in today's market. Only larger, heavier, more expensive versions seem to be available. Try a search for "hammer drill" on Google. Visit the Walter C. May Company for more info on a Pionjar drill.

ryobi3a.jpg (14868 bytes)This is a Ryobi hammer drill. If ever I mention drilling in an article, this is the instrument that was used. The copper pipe funnels exhaust into the drill hole. This is a custom modification to the drill that my dad made a number of years ago that vastly increases the cutting speed by blowing out the cut chips. The drill is light weight which renders it a perfect use for hard to drill boulders in far off locations. I put a 12" ruler on the drill for scale.

ryobi1a.jpg (8976 bytes)Picture of the new wedge of tungsten carbide that was recently set into the end of the bit. This has vastly increased the cutting speed, as well.
