Coon Creek, AR, Day 4, Hwy. 51 Quarry
You are here: MineralCollecting.org >> Posted Articles >> Article 5

Hwy. 51 Quarry is now Jones Mill Quarry. The mine is in the town (if you can call it a town, there's nothing there.) Jones Mills, AR between Malvern and Hot Springs and is on the southern rim of the Magnet Cove alkali syenite intrusive. We were given our run of the upper levels during our visit on 10/23/99. With some gentle persuasion we were given permission to begin our tour on the lowest level, in agreement that we would stay out of the way of any machinery and we would promptly relocate to the upper levels. I found some quartz veins with a few unidentifiables in the cavities. My dad found some massive fluorite and yet more unidentifiables in cavities in a pile of oversize.

On the upper levels the group was finding hematite and pyrite with quartz crystals. I collected a few decent specimens. Not much interesting material was found, like has been found in the past. Near the syenite contact of the Cove my dad collected a few samples of the garnet pseudoleucite syenite pegmatite for research. ~~~Adam.
