Corydon Quarry

Corydon Quarry is the town Corydon, IN, within shooting range of Louisville, KY. This was my first visit to Corydon. We started the day on the upper most levels. Not much was found in this horizon of the quarry so we moved down a few levels (three levels I believe). We discovered the dolomite zone in the wall of the second to lowest bench. Collecting on the walls was not permitted, however ample material was found on the ground due to spawling. The standard pink dolomite was easily worked out of large boulders. The darker gray boulders tended to contain larger specimens, although better crystals may have come from smaller pockets. Plenty of calcite, both crystals and large cleaves, was found in the same area and occasionally it was with or on the dolomite. A few small pockets of yellow calcite were found in one particular boulder.

I neglected to mention, due to their insignificance, that on the upper levels a few small clustered aragonite crystals were found. Also, at the base of a small coal seam were several gypsum fragments.
