Granite Mountain, AR
You are here: MineralCollecting.org >> Posted Articles >> Article 9

This trip to Granite Mountain, AR was a follow up trip to some collecting we had done in the #2 pit. We found a few cavities with micros in them on a previous trip to Arkansas. That area of the quarry had unfortunately been moved around and we didn't find anything interesting. We spent the remainder of the day in Bauxite visiting different syenite outcrops. Fascinating geology, but there was very little of mineralogical interest at these locations at this time.

Later in the afternoon, we drove down to the Magnet Cove area to do some exploring. The folks at Granite Mountain have recently purchased about 50 acres immediately next to the famous Diamond Jo Quarry. We parked next to the house place by the entrance to the DJQ and hiked from there. We walked up slope looking for outcrops of syenite. My dad pointed out an area of an outcrop that was part of the original mining of the DJQ. Just up from that, we started to see gas cavities in the syenite outcrops. Most of what we collected was old, weathered, and decrepit but still quite impressive. This area will be one to keep an eye on! The possibility for some really rare minerals is almost definite. ~Adam.
