Introduction

Welcome to the Mineral Information and Identification Database! This site contains 4407 mineral species listings with comprehensive data and references and a one of a kind identification key. Several keys are available on the Internet. This one utilizes set variables to identify minerals and is not dependent upon absolute user wording to key a mineral. Consider how many ways a user could input the color pink. "pink" "Pink" "pinkish" "light red" and the list continues. Here, you can simply input a "red" color tone and minerals exhibiting any shade of a red color hue will be returned. Consider also blue-green. A user could input both blue or green color tone to return a mineral color of blue-green. This alleviates discrepancies between having to perfectly match a color (is the mineral blue, green, blue-green, green-blue, etc.). This is also useful in searching for other characteristics. Luster has always been a tricky attribute to properly identify. The process is simplified in this database. Like lusters are bundled into luster groups. A user can specify one of eleven lusters but those in turn are keyed to only one of four luster groups. One is dull, four is chatoyant, three is a grouping of shiny and reflective lusters and two is a grouping of resinous, waxy, pearly, greasy, etc. lusters. Habits are also somewhat simplified and will perform a bit looser search than other mineral keys.

Alphabetical Index

Use the links in the Alpha Bar on any of the database pages to view alphabetical listings of mineral species or enter a mineral name or any part of a mineral name into the search box to perform a name search. There are options to match any part of the name or only the beginning of the name.

Properties Search

Use the identification wizard on the main page to select minerals from the database with only specific properties. Click on the "go visual" link to see visual aids that will help with making accurate properties selections. Users may leave any of the attributes unspecified.
