About the Author and the Site

I created this site in September of 1999 as a place to tell about my rockhounding experiences and display a few specimen images. My first site was a shamble and monument to poor html coding. I taught myself html mostly by looking at the code of other websites and hand editing some of my original pages created with Microsoft Front Page. After about a year of updating static pages like a mad-man I began downloading and enabling free-ware perl scripts and automating some of the features. Dissatisfied with the inconsistent look of Joe Schmoe's forum, John Doe's chat, and Johnny Footballheroe's auction, I began editing the scripts to look more consistent and as a side effect I slowly began to learn Perl. I now write many of my own scripts although I continue to edit some of the better ones. The mineral data portion of MineralCollecting.org is all self written. I have no formal computer training at all.

I don't know much of anything about minerals that I haven't personally collected. I get emails all the time asking for specific details about meta-whatsitsite and I simply can't answer those questions except to point the person to a Google.com search. I'm not a geologist or a mineralogist and I have no formal training in either subject. Folks also like to load up emails with all kinds of inside jargon and it should be known that most of the time I don't know what the heck they're talking about. I also am not very familiar with most popular localities or seemingly popular mineral species.

With very few exception my entire collection is self-collected. More later...
