Collecting

The Jacksonville road cut is highway right-of-way. In the past permission has not been required to collect, however, do be polite and courteous when the occasional police officer stops to see what you're doing to his or her highway. Mineralization occurs in the iron ore seams that have invaded the Fort Payne chert. Collecting may be easier when a rope is tied to a tree above the cut. In the absence of rope, it is possible to climb through the pine trees to the yeilding zones. Much of the rock and rubble is loose and will give way so please execute caution. Above all, please take great care to watch for cars when rolling rocks. Use good judgement!

Minerals

Local minerals may include, but are not restricted to, beraunite, cacoxenite, dufrenite, kidwellite, planerite, rockbridgeite, strengite, wavellite. View the available specimens in the pictures listed below:

Tools

Always remember safety glasses, steel toe shoes, and hard hat. Recommended tools include the following in order of importance: rock hammer, crack hammer, crow bar or pry bar, buckets or bags or flats, rope, pick, shovel, optivisor or loupe or magnifying glass, hammer holsters

Suggested supplies include bug repellant, water, snacks, wrapping material.

Jacksonville is highway right-of-way. As far as I know, permission is not needed to collect, however, do be polite and courteous when the occasional police officer stops to see what you're doing to his or her highway. Rope will be very useful at this site. It's not entirely necessary if you don't mind collecting where everyone else has already looked. And above all, please watch for cars when rolling rocks.
Local minerals may include but are not restricted to the following: beraunite, cacoxenite, dufrenite, kidwellite, planerite, rockbridgeite, strengite, wavellite.
