Explanations

Description

Mauldin Mountain, the locality, is actually the Montgomery County Gravel Pit. The pit is on the southeast side of Mauldin Mountain and cuts through Big Fork Chert.

Collecting

Collecting, at present, would appear to not be restricted, however you should probably inquire locally. It's best to collect in the mid to late afternoon bracket, as traffic to the pit slows later in the day. Mineralization occurs in seams and cracks in the Big Fork Chert.

For clarity, if it's green wavellite, it's not necessarily from Mauldin Mountain. Too many Dug Hill specimens are mislabeled as Mauldin Mountain. Additionally, wavellite locales in the Ouachita Mountains are too numerous to list. Please take care to determine the accuracy of the label for any wavellite specimens which come into your possession.

Tools

Always remember safety glasses, steel toe shoes, and hard hat. Recommended tools include the following in order of importance: rock hammer, crow bar or pry bar, pick, shovel, chisel, crack hammer, buckets or bags or flats, optivisor or loupe or magnifying glass

Recommended supplies include the following: water, lunch, snacks, wrapping paper, sunscreen

Driving Directions

From Malvern, AR, take Hwy. 270 through Hot Springs and west to Mt. Ida, AR. Stay on 270 through Mt. Ida. Go about 4 miles on 270 to sign for County Gravel pit and make a right onto a gravel road. Go about 1 mile on gravel road, then left on first road to the left and into the pit.
