Introduction

The timeline begins on the left and moves toward the present day at far right. The top line list the eons, Precambrian for example. The next line lists the eras. The Precambrian Eon, for instance, is divided into three eras, the Hadean, the Archaean and the Proterozoic. The third line is divided into the various periods. The Proterozoic Era is divided into the Paleoproterozoic, the Mesoproterozoic and the Neoproterozoic Periods. The fourth row lists epochs. Currently we are in the Holocene Epoch under the Quarternary Period under the Cenozoic Era under the Phanerozoic Eon. The bottom line displays a year listed under the particular time frame where that year would have occurred.
